    This friend is a non-Black, male, person of color. I say this to say that though, we both sit at the intersection of being people of color, we, in no way, have the same life experiences. It is highly unlikely that he has ever had to know or learned the history of the word "nappy" and what it . "Nappy Hair" drew national attention last year when a first-year teacher in Brooklyn, N.Y., came under fire for reading the book to her class of African-American and Hispanic third-graders.

NAPPY is the title of this simple book about black hair. It begins with engaging descriptions of nappiness ranging from "super-eminently nappy" to "break the comb nappy." At the same time, the accompanying illustrations share the experience of a little girl having her hair done/5(11).

Happy to be Nappy is a feel-good book meant to boost the self-esteem of young girls with kinky hair making it the perfect add to my Black Girl Magic text set. Although the story and illustrations are somewhat overly simplistic I believe that it allows the children to view the hair and styles depicted how they like and use a bit of imagination /5.

The illustrations in this book are gorgeous however the actual storyline is disappointing. I thought this book was about the empowerment of nappy hair however I found it insulting. The beginning and middle of the book was one put down after another then the author tries /5(65).

The book Nappy Hair by Carolivia Heron can be classified as a picture book and it is intended for ages four and up.

Nappy Hair has won the Parenting Reading Magic Award. This book is about a little girl named Brenda who learns the history of her hair and why she should be proud to have nappy hair/5.

Carolivia Herron, the author of "Nappy Hair," said Sherman's students were exactly the audience for whom she intended the book.

"I wrote it delighting in nappy hair," said Herron, who is black. The Nappy Hair Controversy isn’t just about the message that it is said to be portraying. There are also parents who were disturbed by the language used in the book. The book was relayed in ‘black-Caribbean-patois’ dialect with the use of a type of sing song dialogue, call & response.
